During the 2011 legislative session, the City of Red Wing and Flaherty & Hood will continue an initiative launched in 2010 that aims to find a legislative solution to the city’s long-term nuclear waste storage. At the heart of this issue, the city is concerned about the state and local implications of the federal government continuing to fail in meeting its obligations to remove the waste from Minnesota. Under federal law, the United States Department of Energy should have started the process of removing the waste in 1998. During the 2011 legislative session, senior attorney Joe Sullivan will work with the City of Red Wing, legislators and other stakeholders to pass a comprehensive state study of the long-term costs of storing nuclear waste in Minnesota.
