As Flaherty & Hood’s media and communications director, Julie Liew develops and implements communications strategies that bring attention to our clients’ issues and help them achieve success at the legislature. She joined the firm in 2013.
With the ever-evolving media landscape and various modes of communications, Julie performs a variety of roles and responsibilities for the firm and our clients including:
- Coordinating media campaigns and facilitating media inquiries
- Writing op-eds, press releases, letters to the editor, and letters to legislators
- Creating informational and promotional materials
- Maintaining and updating websites
- Social media
- Planning conferences, webinars, “Day at the Capitol” lobbying events and other events
Julie has achieved coverage for our clients in a number of media outlets including the Star Tribune, Associated Press, New York Times, Forum Communications, Pioneer Press, KARE 11, WCCO, KSTP, Gannett Newspapers, MinnPost and other national, regional and local newspapers, radio stations, TV stations and online news organizations.
Prior to joining Flaherty & Hood, Julie lived in New York City, where she worked as a reporter and editor for ALM Inc., which specializes in legal news. She also previously worked as a city and crime reporter for the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer and as a legislative correspondent for the Mesabi Daily News. She has also worked as a freelance writer and editor for ALM, St. Paul Media, Politix, Let’s Talk Kids and other publications and organizations.
Julie grew up on a farm in East Grand Forks, Minn. and now lives in St. Paul with her husband David and three fluffy cats. When she’s not busy developing successful communications strategies for our clients, she enjoys traveling, reading, and trying out new restaurants (while simultaneously avoiding having to cook).
