The legislative team at Flaherty & Hood coordinated and led the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC) Legislative Action Day on Jan. 27.

While the event had to move online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are proud to report that nearly 180 city leaders from across Greater Minnesota joined participated in the event on Zoom.

The day kicked off with an update on the 2021 legislative landscape from CGMC Executive Director Bradley Peterson. He was later joined by CGMC lobbyists Elizabeth Wefel and Scott McMahon who together provided information on some of Greater Minnesota’s top legislative priorities relating to Local Government Aid, wastewater funding and economic development.

The Legislative Action Day event also featured a panel discussion moderated by Peterson and featuring Assistant Senate Majority Leader John Jasinski (R-Faribault), Senate Minority Leader Susan Kent (DFL-Woodbury), Assistant House Majority Leader Dan Wolgamott (DFL-St. Cloud) and House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt (R-Crown). The legislative leaders discussed the challenges of governing during a pandemic, the state budget, and goals for the session.

In the afternoon, city leaders were encouraged to meet with their legislators via Zoom, phone or other methods to talk about the issues that are important to Greater Minnesota communities.

The Legislative Action Day was capped with a fun “pub style” trivia game led by CGMC policy analyst Ania McDonnell and communications associate Kelly Haff, who tested the players’ knowledge of Minnesota Legislature and State Capitol history.
