Flaherty & Hood’s government relations team recently led the 2021 Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC) Fall Conference, which was held Nov. 18-19 in Willmar.

More than 90 elected officials, city staff members and other city leaders from across Greater Minnesota attended the conference which featured several informative speakers, panel discussions and presentations, as well as networking opportunities.

The conference kicked off Thursday afternoon with a presentation by State Demographer Susan Brower, who discussed the results of the 2020 Census and recent demographic trends in Minnesota. The conference continued with a packed schedule of programming including a panel discussion on the importance of community involvement in combating the child care shortage; a presentation from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on the state’s recent settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors; a presentation and small-group discussion about how cities can use their federal American Rescue Plan dollars; a panel discussion featuring first-year legislators Rep. Emma Greenman, Rep. Spencer Igo and Sen. Aric Putnam; a presentation from Flaherty & Hood attorneys Gretel Lee and Bradley Peterson on emerging environmental issues; and a presentation on resident recruitment from Neil Linscheid of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Community Vitality.

In addition, members of the CGMC adopted the organization’s policy positions and legislative priorities for the upcoming 2022 legislative session.
